Scary should be a Halloween Thing

An excerpt from our October 2023 Newsletter.

Scary should be a Halloween thing, not an every day thing.

I feel so conflicted about filling this newsletter with cheerful puns and pictures of cookies when there is real evil, literal evil, loose in the world. Even before the horrors we see unfolding right now on the news, our daughter was texting us from a barricaded room on campus as a student cold-bloodedly shot his professor seven times. "Don't call me. I love you." Less than two weeks later, she was fleeing again. Another gun. Another terrifying text. And my daughter is safe. Just thinking about all the mothers whose children are not safe is almost paralyzing. How is this normal now? It can't be. It just can't.

As I have far too many times before, I am channelling my feelings of helplessness straight into the oven. $10 from every cookie box sold from now through the end of the year will be pooled into a shared donation to these wonderful organizations working to end Gun Violence: Everytown | Giffords | Sandy Hook Promise. And an additional $5 from each Halloween Box will be going to Doctors Without Borders.

After all, what's really scary is doing nothing, so let's do what we can, shall we?
