When Worlds Collide - A Bake Sale for Ukraine

WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE, TASTY THINGS HAPPEN!

Sometimes worlds colliding is a good thing, for example when a Black baker falls in love with a traditional Jewish cookie, and teaches herself to bake them to spite an old college friend. At other times, worlds collide and it feels like we can only watch in horror. But then, the rest of the world comes together, and finds a way to do what they can to help. Thank you to the founders of Hamantashen for Ukraine for this brilliant idea, and thanks in advance to everyone who orders Hamantaschen.

100% of Hamantashen proceeds, along with 10% of all cookie sales through March 31, are going to World Central Kitchen and Polish Humanitarian Action.

Even if you don’t need cookies, please consider supporting these organizations directly. There are also loads of other restaurants and bakeries all over Los Angeles, and the whole country, doing their part to help.

Let’s be world builders, everyone!

BUT THAT’S NOT THE END OF THE STORY.

From our Spring MITM Newsletter:

To paraphrase Mr. Rogers, "when bad things are happening, you look for the people who are helping". Taking it one step further (since we are not 5 anymore), we adults should try our best to BE one of the helpers.

A few weeks ago, I joined an online initiative called Hamantashenfor Ukraine, where bakers across the globe came together to help refugees fleeing the war. In under a week, I was able to raise $1,800, and sent the proceeds to World Central Kitchen and Polish Humanitarian Action. Simply astonishing...and a huge THANK YOU to everyone who ordered and enjoyed the treats. Helper Power!!!

As nice as it would be to leave it at that, it's important to keep learning more and doing more. We are all moved by the plight of Ukrainian refugees, but we have to acknowledge howlong-standing issues of racism and discrimination are playing out during this crisis. (Another article here). Every time you give money, time or attention to a cause, take advantage of the opportunity to educate yourself. Then we'll all have Informed Helper Powers, which are even better.

To that end, I'll be donating 10% all sales in April to Black Women for Black Lives, a group that is organizing direct support for displaced African students and others in Ukraine.

Impactfully yours,

— Sharon
